Free Crochet Rainbow Pattern – Rowena the Rainbow!

Hi guys, how are you doing?! Well, whether you’re feeling a little blue or are already on top of the world you’re about to feel even better, because here is my free crochet rainbow pattern!

Over the last few weeks and months, as the coronavirus situation has proven to be more serious than many people predicted we have all had to make some sacrifices in our life. Staying at home rather than going out has become the new normal, and what little outside time we have been able to snatch has become more precious.

One of the things that has made my walks more enjoyable is spotting all of the rainbows that people have drawn, coloured, painted or built in their windows. The creativity people of all ages are showing is truly fantastic!
After colouring in a few printables that some of my favourite small businesses had designed to help keep us occupied my cro-jo returned (yippee!) and I thought that I’d join in the fun by designing a crochet rainbow that you could make and hang in your own window!
Who’s up for it?!

Premium Pattern for Rowena the Crochet Rainbow

If you want a printable version with plenty of step by step photos you can download this free crochet rainbow pattern now from LoveCrafts and Ravelry. Not bothered and just want the bare bones? Then keep reading!

Tools & Materials

Crochet Hooks:

2.5mm – (You can use whichever hooks you have to hand but I like to use the Clover Amour hooks – they’re lovely to hold and super light so that you can keep crocheting for longer without your hands getting tired!)

  • For a pastel rainbow use shades 011 – Pink, 070 – Apricot, 005 – Vanilla, 045 – Pastel Green, 033 – Light Blue & 017 – Lilac
  • For a bright rainbow use shades 028 – Red, 024 – Smokey Orange, 006 – Yellow, 049 – Green, 031 – Sky Blue & 020 – Purple

Alternative Yarns & Colours:

If you prefer to use a different yarn then go right ahead and use whichever you like! Just remember, that using a different yarn will probably result in your crochet rainbow turning our at a slightly different size to mine.

If you want your crochet rainbow to look as close as possible but can’t get hold of Ricorumi then I’ve listed the colour alternatives for Sirday Happy Cotton and  Scheepjes Catona here. The colours won’t be an exact match, but they are pretty close!

Cut the yarn leaving a long tail  of around 1m then pull through the final stitch. Insert the safety eyes into the spaces that you marked in Round 9.

Step 2 - Closing Up the Body

Thread the yarn tail from the body of your rainbow onto a yarn needle.

Fold your finished crocheted rainbow in half, with the yarn tail emerging from one end.

Starting in the next stitch and moving backwards and forwards between the 2 sides of the rainbow use ladder stitch to sew a long seam to join the 2 halves. This seam will be neater if you only sew through the front loops of each stitch.

Stuff your rainbow as you go as firmly as you would like.

When you reach the end of the seam secure the yarn end and cut off any excess.

Step 3 - Embroidering the Pink Cheeks

Using your yarn needle with the pink yarn embroider a small horizontal line just below each eye, with the two cheeks slightly wider apart than the eyes.

Step 4 - Embroidering the Smile

Using an embroidery needle with the black pearl cotton embroider a mouth onto your cloud. Back stitch tends to be the best stitch for this, and sewing through the centre of each stitch rather than through the gaps will give a smoother appearance.

Your Crochet Rainbow is finished!
